‘World’s Greatest’, ‘Brock’s Famous’ or ‘Proper Drinking Chocolate’ would also all be perfect names. Brock and I have been married almost 16 years and a copy of this has always been taped to the inside of one of our kitchen cupboards…I can’t believe I haven’t posted it yet! I have no idea where the original recipe came from, but it’s served us well. We use good dark chocolate (about 70%), and then no sugar…but when the girls are going to enjoy some with us, we add a titch of dark brown sugar to their mugs – enjoy!
Hot Chocolate – makes 4 mugs
200 g good dark chocolate
1 c. water AND 3 c. milk
12 whole cloves AND 1/8 t. cayenne (less for kids)
4 cinnamon sticks
1/2 c. whipping cream AND 1 t. vanilla
brown sugar for each mug (to taste)
Place the chocolate and water into a microwaveable bowl and heat in 30 second increments, stirring in between, until the chocolate has melted and the mixture is smooth. (Alternatively, if you’re kettle is handy, boil some water and add the cup of boiling water to your bowl of chocolate and the heat should be enough to melt it quickly and smoothly.) At the same time, combine the milk, cloves, cayenne and cinnamon sticks in a medium saucepan and warm the mix up over medium heat while stirring. Heat until bubbles begin to form around the edge, then whisk in the melted chocolate mixture. Bring the hot chocolate to a gentle boil, then reduce to a simmer for 5 minutes. Strain it into a bowl, keeping the cinnamon sticks for garnish.
Return the hot chocolate back to the pot, stir in the cream, bring it all back to a simmer over low heat, then stir in the vanilla, pour it into mugs and garnish with a cinnamon stick. If you want to get really decadent, whip more cream for topping (and garnish further with chocolate shavings).
