chiffon.\u00a0 Sometimes I actually cut the cake in half (to add more frosting in a middle layer), and if I choose to do that again, I&#8217;ll make one and a half times the frosting recipe below.\u00a0 Also keep in mind that this cake turns out beautifully (better even!), if made ahead and frozen&#8230;frosting a cold cake is also much easier &#8211; data-amount=\"2\">2<\/span> c. (250 g) flour<\/em> <strong>AND<\/strong> <em>3 t. baking powder<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span data-amount=\"1.5\">1 1\/2<\/span> c. (300 g) white sugar<\/em> <strong>AND<\/strong> <em>1 t. salt<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Make a well in the center of the mix and add, in order;<\/p>\n<p><em><span data-amount=\"0.5\">1\/2<\/span> c. canola oil<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span data-amount=\"7\">7<\/span> egg yolks<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>poppy seed and water mix<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span data-amount=\"2\">2<\/span> t. vanilla<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span data-amount=\"0.25\">1\/4<\/span> t. baking soda<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Using an electric hand-mixer, beat it all together until smooth.\u00a0 Preheat the oven to 325.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, in your electric mixer, beat the <em><strong>7 egg whites with 1\/2 t. cream of tartar<\/strong><\/em> until they form very stiff peaks \u2013 do NOT under beat. A spatula should leave a clean line.<\/p>\n<p>When the egg whites are ready, carefully and slowly pour the egg yolk mixture over the entire surface of the egg whites, cutting and gently folding the batter together with a spatula. Continue to fold gently, making sure to rotate the bowl, until it\u2019s completely blended and then pour\/scrape the batter into your <em>ungreased<\/em> 10-inch tube pan and smooth the top.<\/p>\n<p>Bake for <span data-amount=\"50\">50<\/span> minutes at 325 and then turn the heat up to 350 and bake for another 10 to 15 minutes. The surface will be cracked, the cake should be busting out of the pan and the top should bounce right back when lightly touched. The easiest way to make sure it&#8217;s perfect is to use an instant thermometer and make sure the middle has reached 200 degrees.\u00a0 Don\u2019t let anyone run or jump around your house when this is baking!<\/p>\n<p>Immediately invert the cake so that the center bit is balanced on a funnel and the whole cake is hanging upside down but not touching anything but the funnel \u2013 it needs to stay this way until it <em>cools completely<\/em>.\u00a0 Newer tube pans should have &#8216;feet&#8217; that allow the cake to be inverted without any outside assistance.<\/p>\n<p>Using a bread knife, carefully trim the puffed out cake bits (if necessary), then carefully loosen any visible bit of cake from any visible bit of pan that it\u2019s touching, using your thinnest spatula \u2013 the cake should then basically fall out of the pan with the bottom tray still attached. Use the same method to loosen it from the bottom tray and you should have a pretty good-looking cake.\u00a0 I found this one of the easiest chiffons to de-pan.\u00a0 Since it&#8217;s cooled completely, wrap well and freeze until &#8216;eating day&#8217; or set it aside until your frosting is ready.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Poppy Seed Chiffon Topping <\/strong><em>&#8211; doubled to thickly frost the whole cake<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In a large pot, combine the following;<\/p>\n<p><em><span data-amount=\"1.3333333333333\">1 1\/3<\/span> c. (267 g) sugar<\/em> <strong>AND<\/strong> <em>1 c.
